Jared Foundation & Fresh Start Challenge

Back in the beginning of March we had a very special guest speaker come to our building!  It was Subway's JARED FOGEL!
He came to discuss with the students the importance of regular exercise and making healthy food choices.  He spoke about his childhood, what brought him to obesity and then how he defeated obesity.  At that point he broke out the famous big-pair-o-jeans.  The whole gym did a collective "whoa!!!" at the sight of them.  He spoke about the difficulties he had while being that size. I believe the kids "got it".

He has partnered with Subway to work with elementary schools in the fight against childhood obesity. You can read more about the Jared Foundation and the partnership with C.A.T.C.H here.  "Every child should have the opportunity to grow up healthy. Overweight children are at risk for health problems during their youth and as adults. They are more likely to have risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes. Additionally, overweight children and adolescents are likely to become obese adults. Children need to engage in physical activity and learn healthy eating habits to overcome this widespread issue."

One of our very own got to be a volunteer and help lead the school in some easy exercises alongside Jared and the Subway Dude.  Way to go!!

A challenge has also been issued by the Jared Foundation. Students are to record their healthy choices for the next 4 weeks. Recording forms were sent home on the 17th. When your child has completed the form, mail it in to the address on the form and your child will receive a free Subway sandwich!  Also, our school has the opportunity to win a fitness grant with each entry form they the foundation receives! Wouldn't that be amazing!

A Healthy Reminder

Hello families!   This is just a reminder that cold and flu season is here! !!
Please be sure your child is getting enough rest, practicing good hand washing and eating a variety of fruits and vegetables.   It's important that your child stays healthy so the rest of your family doesn't catch the bug and also so that we don't spread sick germs back and forth in our room.

With that being said...Our attendance has gotten worse over the past month.  Please help ensure your child is at school each day and on time unless he or she is sick.  There is a lot of learning that takes place promptly at 803 am when the bell rings and continues right up until dismissal.

Thank you for your continued support and helping to make this year a success!!!
(Big thanks to GV for the picture props)
